Hygrophila difformis (Water Wisteria)
If you want that soft, leafy, proper “underwater jungle” look without getting into high-maintenance nonsense, this is it. Hygrophila difformis (Water Wisteria) throws out bright green, lace-like leaves that look fancy… but the plant itself is anything but.
It grows fast, fills space, and makes your tank look full way quicker than it should.
🌿 Why you want it
- Instant bushy volume - great for filling gaps
- Those detailed, fern-like leaves add texture without trying too hard
- Beginner friendly but still looks legit in a proper scape
- Helps stabilise tanks by sucking up nutrients fast
✂️ The “it’s getting out of hand” bit
This one doesn’t mess around.
Give it decent light and it’ll shoot up, branch out, and turn into a full-on bush. You’ll be trimming regularly - but every trim = more plants.
Cut, replant, repeat. Easy.
📍 Where it fits
- Midground to background
- Can also be used as a loose bush feature
- Works well tucked around wood or behind hardscape
💡 Care
- Light: low to high (grows faster with more)
- CO₂: not required, but boosts growth
- Growth: fast
- Propagation: cut stems and replant tops
💧 Water tolerance
Very forgiving - handles a wide range. Good choice if your parameters aren’t perfect
💬 TBC take
This is your “make it look full, fast” plant.
Chuck it in, give it a bit of light, and suddenly your tank looks like it’s been running for months. Just be ready with the scissors - this one doesn’t know when to stop.
