Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Brown’
If you want that rich, earthy jungle look without babysitting your tank, this is it. Crypt wendtii ‘Brown’ throws out deep bronze to dark chocolate leaves that get even richer under decent light. Slightly wavy, slightly textured, slightly dramatic - in a good way.
This is one of those plants that just gets on with it. No fuss, no diva behaviour (well… mostly - more on that below).
This one’s from Sri Lanka (where I’m from), so it’s basically family.
🌿 Why you want it
- Adds proper contrast against all your bright greens
- Works in almost any setup - low tech to high tech
- Handles a wide range of water like a champ
- Spreads slowly into a nice bushy patch over time
⚠️ The “crypt melt” talk (don’t panic)
Like most crypts, it might throw a tantrum when you first plant it - leaves can melt off. Looks tragic. It’s not.
Just leave it alone. It’ll bounce back stronger with fresh growth adapted to your tank.

- Perfect for the foreground to midground
- Height stays around 10-20cm, so it won’t take over your whole scape
💡 Care
- Light: low to medium (go higher if you want darker tones)
- CO₂: not required, but appreciates it
- Growth: steady, not in a rush
- Propagation: sends out runners - free plants over time
💧 Water tolerance
Soft, hard, somewhere in between - it doesn’t really care. Even works in tougher setups like cichlid tanks.

This is your “set and forget” plant.
Chuck it in, ignore it for a bit, and suddenly you’ve got a lush little bush making your tank look like you know what you’re doing.
