Microsorum pteropus (Windeløv Java Fern)
The fancy-haired cousin of regular Java Fern.
Windelov takes everything people love about Java Fern and adds a bit of flair. Instead of simple leaf tips, the ends split into delicate lace-like fronds that look almost like tiny underwater antlers.
It's still the same tough, beginner-friendly plant underneath - just with a lot more personality.
🌿 Why you want it
- Unique lace-like leaf tips unlike any other fern
- Creates texture and detail without looking messy
- Super hardy and beginner-friendly
- Grows beautifully on wood and rock
👑 The fancy bits
Those frilly leaf tips aren't damaged leaves - that's exactly what Windelov is supposed to look like.
As it matures, the ends of the leaves split into increasingly intricate lace-like patterns, giving it a much more detailed look than other Java Ferns.
📍 Where it fits
- Perfect for the midground to background
- Looks especially good attached to driftwood where the frilly leaf tips can spread out and become a feature.
💡 Care
- Light: low to medium
- CO₂: not required
- Growth: slow
- Propagation: new plantlets grow from older leaves
💧 Water tolerance
Very forgiving. Handles soft or hard water, low tech tanks, high tech tanks, and most beginner mistakes without complaint.
💬 TBC take
If regular Java Fern is the reliable workhorse, Windelov is the workhorse that turned up with a fancy haircut.
One small clump can add a surprising amount of detail to an aquascape and gives people something to look twice at without being flashy or difficult.
